God is LOVE...seriously

One of those things that people just say all the time in church - "God is love."

It's along the same lines as "Jesus loves you" and "Christ died for your sins" and all those important things that people should know, hear all the time, but never really know. Ya know?

Today, while I was trying to explain the purpose of the teacher strike to the students, I found that I was faced with some students who understood, but also a handful of conceited responses that seem to think that everything revolves around them:
"Why are you striking?" "Does that mean we don't get to play sports anymore because of you being on strike (unpaid work)?" "Does that mean we don't get our report cards because you are doing less work (even if it's unpaid work)?" "This is stupid" "How is this for us?" *tunes out explanation*

In my perspective, what is the point of taking a stand in doing something for these people who don't understand, don't appreciate, and don't care to learn about it? The terms ignorant, arrogant, short-sighted, self-absorbed, and immediate gratification comes to mind.

Yes, I'm pissed. Because in a job where most teachers are willing to sacrifice their own pathetic salary in an extremely expensive city to receive a better learning environment for the sake of the students, and receiving rude and condemning responses from the students really stirs up a wrath from within me.

At the same time, each day I go through praying for God to give me love and patience towards the kids, this experience really taught me how God must see us:
A bunch of whiney ninnies who are given a ton of blessings and yet still complains about how unfair life is. People who think they are better and deserve more than their neighbour. People who finds delight in seeing others fail just to make themselves feel like more of a winner. People who does not hesitate to take and feels like it's the biggest thing in the world to sacrifice.

How did God manage not to smite all us??? Because GOD IS LOVE. And it's damn hard having the power to rid this world of this dysfunctional race and choosing not to do it because He actually loves us that much.

All I have to say is everyone should be thankful that I'm not God because we'd all be fried chicken by now.

I've been at a spiritual low for awhile now and people (probably the one or two who bothers to read this) will probably find me a dark person considering it's always been something negative I write about. But I guess I consider this rarely visited blog a place to vent and not always to Jay - which I still do a lot so props to him for not getting pissed at me for being a thundercloud half the time.

Anyways, I know when I'm at a low when I find it so difficult to love another. When my positive energy is so easily overshadowed by someone's negative energy. For example, my day is going fine (but fine I mean I'm neither happy, nor sad) and then I go and hang around a person who makes annoying comments for about 2 minutes and I already want to chuck the closest object within hands reach at that person's head. I honestly wonder to myself when I became so short tempered. Not like I was that patient to begin with but I was definitely more of a happy-go-lucky person back then who probably wouldn't even notice people who make annoying comments here and there and small gestures and movements that could possibly signify that they are dissing me. I just didn't used to care because I'm happy not noticing. So why am I so sensitive and quick to anger now? I feel like I have very little love to give and I can't blame anyone else because I know that if I'm feeling this way, I must be giving off a negative vibe to someone else as well who will probably not treat me as friendly and closely since I'm probably intimidating and scary to be around. Even if I try to smile and be happy, I have very little to say and I feel distant with people I'm around. My conversational abilities have shot way down and I'm at a point where I just no longer want to talk to people anymore. All these qualities I don't want. I want to be my old self again. A person who cares about others and want to do more for others and want to make people happy which makes me happy. At this state, all my energy is going towards appeasing myself and not angering myself which is very selfish. God seems so far away...or maybe I'm just pushing Him away somehow because my heart doesn't feel the warm glow that should be there since He is living within me. I need Him now more than ever but waiting for something to happen...just don't know if I'm supposed to wait or do something.

Just today, I was at a friend's house and her husband just has to find a need to comment on the fact that my dad is 'cool' because he's the only non-Christian in my family. I have no reaction to that other than anger. I literally wanted to shove my seat back and leave. I obviously didn't because I know that it's not the right thing to do but I was burning inside. What does he know about my family difficulties over the years from my dad's side of the family being against us for being Christians? Not a dang thing! I don't know why people feel the need to make a comment like that. It's like going up to a cancer survivor and for no particular reason start saying "You said you had cancer, right? I don't believe in that. I think it's all in your head and if you believe you have cancer, then you do. I never had cancer because I don't believe I would." I mean it's a dumb example but even from that you can see that it's not socially acceptable to make a demeaning and degrading comment about something you know nothing about and just shove your own ignorant perspective into it. What purpose does that serve? How was I supposed to respond to it? What I really want to know is how is a Christian supposed to respond to it? Fight it out and stand up for your faith? Respond in love and understand in your heart that there are people who will persecute you and to set a good example? Hide under the bed? I don't know. It's infuriating. Yet another day if the life of the anti-sunshine.

First off I'll have to admit that I do not plan to continue to blog the gratitude challenge just because I know it'll be an empty promise. At some point I'll have to figure it out myself for all the things I'm grateful for and to continue to remind myself that God always provides.

Tonight was one of those nights that shakes my faith in another person. I realize and have experienced negative things with EVERY person that I've come to known as a friend. I accept those negative traits as just part of who they are and in general, I believe that my friends are good people. Honestly, I believe that all people are good people in the eyes of someone and I just happen to not be friends with them due to personality differences or maybe because they are no where near me. In the eyes of God, who sees our vast amount of sins and still loves us and sent His son to die for us. There has got to be a reason why we are saved.

But what happens when there is a revelation that someone who is one of your close friends is actually not who you thought they were? That behind that smile, there is something sinister - a purpose for being friends with you planning to someday use you. That actions and words don't match at all! Is it possible that having seen that person struggle through so much pain, given up so much for other people, seen that person battling constantly inside themselves and expressing to you their weaknesses - can that person be someone entirely different? I've always wondered how some people can end up marrying a cheating b*st*rd and not realize it until 20 years later. How can you be so close, yet so far? Fools. That's how I feel like right now. A big fool.

But what am I supposed to do? With my personality, faking things is more difficult than just duking it out and end up on bad terms. At least there's still truth in a scream fest. What's the point of putting on a smile and putting effort into something you don't believe in? At this moment, the only reason why I can't demand the truth is because of a different person. It's like shoving me in a crack in the cement while I get poo smeared on my face from both sides and just take it.

God please give me wisdom and give me eyes to see the truth - the full truth.

This is a short insert from the very slow thanksgiving blog entries. I think the reason I'm having a lot of difficulties writing about what I'm thankful for is because I've just been really bitter lately. It's either the stress from long work hours or lack of sleep or something but I'm so sensitive to any and every negative comment and I have lost all patience with people. Say something slightly offensive to me and I'd want to backhand smack you. On top of all that, my bitterness is causing me more stress because I know I shouldn't be like this, but the stress doesn't help me figure it out faster and it's making me more bitter. Endless cycle!!! Why have I become like this? I pray the Lord pull me from this pit soon. Anyone else who read this blog, I would appreciate if you prayed for me as well. Thanks in advance.

Getting most of my marks done for term 1 cut-off. Tiring work =_=
Jason coming to visit me as a sit in a dark corner inputting my marks.
Having dinner ready as I got home. Having a home-cooked meal after starving for a couple of hours tastes extra good =)
My Catering Club - JOLLY CORNER CAFE - is under way! Anyone want some delicious treats come by my school on Dec 14 at 3:30pm and hang out at our cafe. Who needs bubble tea anyways?
Korean dramas - they're so much more interesting than I thought they'd be. Brilliant Legacy gave me hours of good entertainment, much sleep deprived because it's so addictive.
Christmas! Regardless, it's still one of my favourite times of the year because it brings back so many happy memories. Still waiting for that carriage ride through Central Park and seeing the big Christmas tree in New York to complete my fantasy.
My car being fixed for a decent price. Really didn't expect to have such a gaping hole in my wallet but praise the Lord for giving me a car and providing me with a job to pay for the many unfortunate incidences. To be honest, it could have been a lot worse. Who knows what accident I might have gotten into if I'd made it to the big streets?
My dad for going around and finding an inexpensive autobody shop for me and negotiating prices for me and checking up on my car while it's being fixed (it's near his work place). Makes me feel less like I'm going to be gypped because I'm a girl who knows not much about cars.
Korres eyeliner deal at Lynnwood! Originally went down because Jason wanted to pick up a board game but I ended up getting the deal. One of my fave black pencil eyeliner is by Korres which I picked up at Sephora for $21. Found a limited time package deal of 10 eyeliners for only $32.50 (USD plus tax). WOW!
Warm baths - somehow particular enticing this time of year. So comfy... *gurgle drown* j/k!

40 Day Gratitude Challenge - Day 5

Today I'm thankful for:

Snow! I think you either love it or hate it. For me, snow has it's inconveniences but it always bring back happy childhood feelings. I remember living in my first house, looking up at the snow falling until it feels like I'm flying up towards the sky. I guess this is why they say early childhood experiences are important in shaping your life?
Warm home - when it's cold outside, I feel blessed to be inside my warm house admiring the beauty.
Youtube - endless videos that show super talented people showcasing their skills. It really opens up my eyes to what kind of gifts are out there. Then again, I need to stay away from beauty reviews because it always makes me want to shop =S
The big kitchen warehouse sale. I originally thought I couldn't go because it was by invitation only, but my colleague sent me her invitation so I could go. Bought lots of kitchenware goodies. I'm quite as addicted to kitchenware as I am to make-up. Bought pie/cake pans, egg poacher, pancake stencils, mini sifter, a mini mandoline, an apple peeler/corer/cutter, and a bunch of random stuff I probably won't need but nice to have if I ever need it. :)
Vegas trip - we are going! I was looking forward to traveling this winter holiday. It's motivating me to get through the year one break at a time. After this it's planning something for spring break =) Let me know if you guys have ideas! So far it's my sisters and Jason. Gonna be a fun time!
Columbia jacket - bought it last time when Jason, his parents and I went to the states. Jason is a Columbia fan because he loves all his jackets he gets from there so he convinced me that it's better than investing in another North Face jacket. It was a great deal and is a double so I can wear both layers or just the thinner one underneath. I think it'll really come in happy now that it's going to be a cold winter.
My car - yes it's been busted since the first month I got it due more to the crazy snowfall in 2008 more than my driving skills. But despite it's ugly battle scars that make a 2 year old car look so beaten down, it's been reliably taking me to travel different destinations and giving me the freedom to go where I want. I even made it down to Oregon and back!
Nails - this one is random but I've been into nail art since Paula did my nails and I'm happy to have relatively nicely shaped nails to work with.
Friends - don't see them a lot these days but it's nice they still remember me enough to send invites for gatherings. Always nice to know that there are people out there who like me (well...most of the time anyways :D)
My bed - warm and snuggly and have been there for me for over 10 years. Gonna jump in and bundle up now. Good night!!!

40 Day Gratitude Challenge - Day 4

Today I'm thankful for:

A relatively short staff meeting, and I was not nodding off!
Being able to finish making my Preservation Arts test for the grade 11/12s.
Double of my spare blocks due to the Remembrance Day assembly next week! I get a break between 9:25am-12:35pm! Now to think of something totally unproductive to do during that time...
The newly put together Christian Club - first meeting I went to today, we played Biblical Charades. Was lots of fun and nice to see familiar faces of students I didn't know were Christians.
Ursula who seeked to resolve our tiff by buying me a larger container of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
The man who was very rude, came up to me and Jason and told us off for the driving mistake his son made, and then proceeded to walk away and not listen to our explanation. We were on our way to church (and so was he). Jason and I were very angry and felt disrespected. But through the sermon, we found peace. Jason was also reminded and shared with me that God often feels how we feel. Because often when we pray, we rarely listen, but just us spewing out our needs to God. If we felt angry and unjustified, I can't imagine how God feels. A good reminder and food for thought.
Finding the cheaper version of a higher recommended lip liner.
The mini-Halloween chocolate bars. I feel less guilty eating small ones (now it's just a matter of keeping the numbers to a minimum).
The ability to drive to work in the pouring rain and dark mornings.
The pouring rain and dark mornings - sounds strange but the change it weather makes me think of Christmas. Plus waking up and going to work in the dark somehow makes me feel like I woke up earlier than usual and therefore more productive.

Today, I'm thankful for...

Jason's dad driving us all down to the states for a bit of shopping.
Having some leftover US dollars to use so no need to convert more out of my account.
Finding a very warm Columbia winter jacket (thanks to Jason's suggestion since he's a fan) to replace my 5 year old pink puffy North Face jacket. It was on sale from $210 down to $150 and then an additional 25% off. And it's actually 2 in 1 so I can unzip the top layer and just wear the bottom layer (which alone costs $70). Great deal for a quality jacket.
Being able to go find the handbag my sister wanted to buy for my mom at the Coach outlet store, get to the cashier and pay before a huge line-ups formed in- and outside of the store.
Being able to sleep during the long car ride.
Finding the Revlon Super Lustrous lip gloss colours that are not yet (or maybe they won't be available at all) in Vancouver stores! Been searching in every London Drugs, Shoppers Drug Mart, Superstore, and Walmart around here and no luck until today at Target. And better yet, the prices is half of what they sell it here.
Finding mini Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry ice cream for $1 each (don't get to indulge that like everyday!)
Eating some delicious steak once again at Outback Steakhouse.
Getting through the borders without waiting too long and with no hassle.
Getting home safely from the mini road-trip.

Today, I'm thankful for...

Having a toilet available when I was suddenly attacked with a major stomachache after what I suspect as eating some old ham.
The cool sensation of tiger balm rubbed on my belly. It reminds me of childhood.
Getting paid and being able to pay off my hefty visa bill.
Having some Christian students (none of the ones I'm teaching this year) drop by after school and had a short but rather nice chit-chat on science and Christianity.
The sunny weather which brightens up my mood, but chilly enough to keep groceries in the car rather than stuffing my refrigerator =)
My sweet student who wrote Happy Birthday on a piece of wrapped gum when she found out it was Jason's birthday.
My new computer - it's so much faster and the screen is so much brighter!
Praise 106.5 - my radio station for the past three years where God uses music and sermons that speak to me.
My bed - it's so comfortable *snuggle*
The ability to snooze, hopefully dreamlessly, tonight.

Hopefully there never comes in time in my life when I'm no longer thankful. Praise the Lord for this challenge.

Mom:
Cooking dinner for us every night despite the long, tough work hours. Preparing my lunch for me so I can just grab it out of the fridge (good job, food teachers), and doing household chores on her day off. My schedule would be way more packed without her, and I know I don't deserve it.
Dad:
Working from 5am-8pm everyday to be our provider of many of the luxuries in life while he skimps on himself. Please Lord, don't let me forget to pray that he will eventually open his heart up to You.
Theo:
Kindhearted and inspires me to be a person I used to be. He's still often more patient than most of us in the family and reminds me of my popo. His negative traits are a reminder of what we've taught him. How shameful I am to not have been a better example.
Ursula:
For sharing her love of fashion and her life issues with me, despite the constant backlash she gets from a tough-love type of sister (yes, both for shopping and for other life problems).
Brenda:
For continuing to keep in touch with the family even after having married and moved out. For her understanding in many situations and rarely ever making me feel guilty.
Jason:
For dropping by after school to surprise me with a screamer and helping me supervise my kids while I make my grocery runs, for being patient even when I'm not reasonable, and for showing me how to have healthy relationships.
Catering Club
During my practicum, I wished for students who were like my sponsors'. They hung out in the classroom, shared their life with them, and jumped to help out whenever possible. During that time, I was inspired seeing that they have such a connection and I wondered if I would ever have that. For the past 3 years of teaching, I have almost immediately gained my own lovely group of kids, known as the Catering Club who are willing to do just that. They make my job worthwhile.
My teaching job
After receiving the lay-off notice at the end of the last school year, I'm thankful to once again be teaching full-time without financial worry.
My make-up job
The consistent flow of clients, even when unexpected. Thank you friends for your referrals, for believing in my work, and for allowing me to do what I enjoy.
God
For without Him, none of the above would be possible. Just as I was listening to a sermon on Praise 106.5 last night, often we take too much credit for what He has blessed us with. He's reminded me to be humble and loving, a challenge I constantly need to battle with.

I tried to be specific because if I'm any more general, I'm sure I'll be repeating myself day in and day out. I guess last thing I'm going to say is that I'm thankful I'm at home typing this today rather than still being at work =)

A pair of shoes I'm currently craving but know that it'll be a bad idea to buy them because they're too high and I'll be limping within 5 minutes of wearing them on concrete. Why do my feet not have any cushion?!

I changed my mind after going in and trying it. It doesn't look as good on the feet as it does by itself, though it is quite a work of art. I ended up trying on and loving these peach shoes that reminds me of my mom's back when we were kids. Very retro but I love it!

I adore this song. I don't think I've changed my radio from Praise 106.5 for the last two years, because the songs are so uplifting and constantly surrounds me with God's love. Josh Wilson's song "Before the Morning" really helps remind me that the pain we experience is always there for a reason, and it paves a path for a better ending. Just have faith in God with whatever happens in life. Without suffering, we will not understand compassion. Without the poor, we will not appreciate our riches. When we focus on the negative, things only seem to get worse and often times we make crazy decisions during our depressed times which just leads to more pain. But it's undeniable that worst of times brings out the best in some people and God's grace is manifested. That Light is what makes life worth living.

It's been awhile since the last update. A lot has happened since then with the building up of Envy Me being the biggest one. I've decided to leave my beauty blogging on my new website (elenatsang.wordpress.com) which is also the website you can refer friends to if they want to see my make-up work =)

This blog is now dedicated to my encounters, musings, and walk with God - the basis of my life. This Easter, I've felt less emotional than other years. But in quiet realization, I've decided to revive my bible study life. My faith is always and has always been there, and it does not sway (at least not dramatically). However, I've always neglected picking up the bible and really getting to know God's word. After watching the Discovery Channel show "Who Framed Jesus?" I felt like there is a need to know the Scriptures well to be able to not be swayed by documentaries who use Scriptures to deduce their conclusions my faith.

God has really blessed me over the past year. I have no complaints, other than my own behaviour being less than pleasing to God (forgive me please!). Everything has been smooth sailing. With the cutting back of teachers, I've yet to feel the sting of the axe (though I can't say for sure since 100 teachers are supposedly going to be laid off this year in Richmond). Envy Me has been provided with multiple blessings in its growth - God sending the right people to help develop us and give us a brighter future. My career, despite the hard work I need to put into it, feels like it's riding on the will of God. Even if this all changes tomorrow, I'm not worried because who's to say that God doesn't have a bigger and better plan for me? Life is good.

How would I wear this scarf? Since the scarf is light coloured and very intricate in design, I wouldn't want my outfit to take away from it at all. And to be true to my own style, denim is a must. So my outfit would compose of:

A simple, black, v-neck cotton shirt or sweater
A pair of plain gray or dark blue straight-leg jeans
Black (or aqua since I love colourful shoes and it matches with the scarf!) pumps
And perhaps a set of small silver dangly earrings

A marvelous shopping trip!

For women, at least for me, finding a great bargain makes a shopping trip just so worth it! Don't need to buy a lot. Just a few lovely items will make my day.

Saturday, Jay and I drove down to the states just to chill, and since people were coming up for the Olympics rather than going down, there were no line-ups at the border (yay!) . After watching the vlog of MissChievous (youtube her! She's fab!) I went to the Cosmetic Company Store in Seattle Premium Outlets and picked up these:

The Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Platinum Pink. This is great to giving you that healthy glow, especially nice on people with fair skin. Normally $40, I picked it up for $25. I wanted the Shimmer Brick in Copper Diamond as well but it was $3 more so I cheaped out. The colours are beautiful and can be worn over your favourite blush because it's so sheer.

MAC pigments. I was jumping-out-of-my-jacket excited when I saw this at the store! I really wanted to get this set during the holidays (it's one of three of the holiday gift collections of 2009) but it was around $38, which was a bit pricey for me. I wanted it so badly, particularly because of the glitter that I placed right in front. It's so amazingly shimmery, it looks like the night sky. My friend bought it at The Bay MAC counters because they were sold out in the MAC stores. Unfortunately, make-up artist discounts don't work at The Bay locations, so I couldn't make myself pull out the bills. I am on a budget after all. I had to step back and have a wee bit of will power. Well, that sure paid off! I found this gem for $22.75! It was such a great deal, I purchased the pink/purple set as well for Paula's birthday since they're her favourite colours. So excited I practically skipped out of the store back to my car.

The Forever21 store in Metro is great but they should have a For Love 21 here as well. It's a great accessory store, branched from Forever 21. It's way cheaper and the stuff is much nicer than Claire's/Icing/Ardene. I bought these lace stockings for $5.80 each. Love them! I actually love stockings or leggings in general because I don't like showing bare legs unless I'm dying of heat, and they really dress up a mundane outfit. I already have multi-coloured ones and polka-dots!

On top of these, I purchased a couple of shirts, but not really worth showing.

Dinner was at Outback Steakhouse. I gotta say this is my favourite place for steak - EVER! I'm definitely a steak person. The sheer pleasure of eating a perfectly cooked filet tenderloin is indescribable. It's probably the second time in my life that I've ever had steak that melts in your mouth (first time was in Las Vegas - Paris Hotel - Le Cafe). It's so delicious! And they sure know how to cook their steaks. Usually when I order medium-rare, it comes out as medium. Never as juicy as I'd like it to be. We ordered a 20 oz Porterhouse steak with two sides (garlic mashed potatoes and sweet potato), which was plenty for the both of us to share. Here's the kicker - $26.95! You can probably get a 6oz steak at Milestones for that price. We ordered the same steak at Shore Club for $50 and I think this one tastes even better. Not to mention the service is great, and I don't have to dress up and yet still feel inferior while I make a mess cutting and eating my free loaf of bread =D Ah, my tongue is still dancing.

All in all, a marvelous trip!

A dream is a wish your heart makes...

With the Olympics going on, you see all these athletes who have trained so hard to get to where they are. Part intense training, part natural talent, and part being able to be in the right place at the right time and meeting the right people. Certainly blessed.

A major hindrance in attaining such dreams in Canada? The typical Asian life: you work hard in school to get good grades so you can get into a good university where you can either study to be a lawyer, doctor, accountant, or a teacher. I know I fall under that category. And even now, I see parents pushing their kids to take physics and biology and chemistry and anything that doesn't fall under those academic courses are considered useless for their future. Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. Oftentimes, Asian parents pigeon-hole their kids into very specific careers that are limited to only a small population. The moment they don't do well in these subjects, tutors are hired, pressuring these kids to cram into their minds what is naturally difficult for them, while the skills they may have remain hidden and unseen. Kids start to think "I'm stupid." Well, do these kids have any dreams of their own? Do they know what their passion is? When they're in class, are they motivated to learn or just motivated by marks? Are their careers and futures their own decisions or their parents? Would they ever learn to make their own life decisions? Hmmm...that's a thinker.

On a different note, I was also thinking, wouldn't it be great if we can take a baby and through analysis of their brains and body, we can determine what their are naturally built for? Such as a body that is ideal to learn dance, or a mind that is ideal to learn math. Wouldn't it be great if everyone was able to start from what their good at rather than so much trial and error? Some people may never realize their skills because they've just never been given the opportunity to use them and hone them. Isn't it a waste? Jay brought up a good point - it wouldn't be much fun if everyone was good at everything. There would be to proteges because everyone would be one. I do agree with that on many levels. I suppose that just came from my own regrets on not being able to follow my own dreams.

I wanted to learn wushu, my parents put me in piano because it was more feminine. When given the opportunity to learn wushu in a secondary school extracurricular club, I took it. But eventually the class size dropped and I was the few people left, then class disappeared all together. Oh well, kicking-butt-super-woman dream was gone.

I wanted to be a fashion designer, my parents wanted me to go into university because fashion design was not 'practical' and there would be 'no jobs' for me. So, I go through my relatively mundane university life while watching others around me living the dreams that I originally wanted. I remembered ever since I was in elementary school, I created my own fashion booklets and designed dresses. I adored beautiful clothing and I would copy what I saw. Come to think of it, how many kids already knew what they wanted to be at that age? Even with my small amount of training, I was told by my textiles sponsor teacher that I had the best skills of any other student teacher she's had, and that I would go far if my skills were more developed. This coming from an extremely skilled lady with extremely high expectations, who have seen and brought up many talented designers. Receiving a compliment from someone I admired so much, I was happy at that moment but my heart also dropped. I had that passion and the skill and I let it slip away because of my pigeon-holed lifestyle. Unfortunately, I would not be able to drop all my responsibilities right now to pursue that dream.

Am I totally hating my life right now? No. Am I blessed? Yes. Would I be who I am right now without having lived through my 'mundane' life? Nope. Do I dislike my parents for not supporting my dreams? Definitely not. I understand that they come from a much more underprivileged background and came here so that I could live a better life. And in their eyes, it means getting a university education and a safe, steady job.

In general, each person has a path and I don't know how things would have turned out if I had followed my dreams, but that's not important anymore. I am happy with the many blessings that I have been given. The take-home message that I learned from these experiences is what I can do with it. To all the students I'm teaching and eventually when I have a children, I want to be a person who is supportive of their dreams. I want to be able to pick up on what they love and point that out to them. I want to be the one to open their eyes to the hundreds of careers out there that would utilize what they CAN do and not force them to fit a mold of what others feel is acceptable. Parents should hire tutors to help kids get further ahead on what they love, rather than hiring a tutor to push them into studying more of what they hate. God has given each person talents/gifts, so use them for His glory! The kids will be happier and the world would benefit from their skills.

Today, I finally learned the origin of Valentine's Day. Apparently, there was a priest named Valentine who was martyred for his beliefs. However, he was filled with so much love that he continued to love those who persecuted and eventually killed him.

Most people relate this holiday to chocolates and roses and romantic feelings between couples. Who really knew that the origin was rooted in something not so romantic, but courageous and admirable? So...shall we say 'happy holidays' to be politically correct? ;)

Christmas has come and gone and whenever people ask me what I want for Christmas or on my birthdays, I really don't have anything particular in mind. I just say....'uh...a gift card from good ol' RW&Co' or 'wait until I find something I want, then I will tell you' or 'I don't know, just get me anything'. But throughout my day to day browsing and just seeing what's out there, there are tons of things that I really want to get my hands on!

Item #1 - Ben Nye Grand Lumiere Palette

Many people have seen this palette used by you tube makeup gurus like Michelle Phan. I actually heard of Ben Nye products when I was at Blanche. They are super pigmented and can be used for clown makeup. The downside is that for someone on a budget, they are a bit pricey as one purchase. Not that they're not a good deal. For the size of the pigment and the number of colours, it's actually a great price! Most places sell them for $65-75. Bubba's Clown Supplies sell it online for $54 but with shipping, it adds up to $63 which is around the same.

Item #2 - Victorian Style Necklace

Etsy is a great site to find unique items. Anyone who knows my taste in jewelry knows that I have a thing for antique styles. This is a really pretty one. It's $33 USD, not including shipping. Will probably add up to $40 CAD. (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40319440). But it's so pretty and it's handmade!

Item #3 - Hakuhodo Brushes

Hakuhodo is a company that produces handmade brushes made in Japan. They can be quite expensive, but the quality is incredible. The brush above is one from their S100 Series, which is a more of a luxury line in the company. It's the one I really want - Pointed Blush Brush made from goat hair ($76 USD not including shipping). The handle is made of wood and colored in beautiful vermilion, a traditional Japanese color. It broadens slightly toward the tip and is designed to fit perfectly in the hand.The ferrules are made of brass-rolled 24-karat gold with clear coating. For a makeup artist, the tools are as important as the products. I'm SOOO disappointed that they're not listed to be at IMATS in Vancouver, but they are going to be at the one in Los Angeles and Sydney *cries*.

*Side note* I was using a powder brush, that came as part of a set, on my model for Monday's photoshoot. As I was applying the Mac Blot Powder, the handle came right off the ferrule. It was ridiculous.

Item #4 - Nicole Miller: Truly, Madly, Deeply Gown

Is this gown not absolutely gorgeous? It comes in white as well! I wouldn't mind wearing it as a wedding dress. This gown reminds me of a mixture between East Indian saris and beach wear. It's so soft and pretty with intricate prints. The only thing that would hurt me is the price - $510 USD.

Item #5 - DSLR Cameras and Photography for Dummies

I love working with photographers and such but sometimes finding a model and photographer and coming up with a date, time, and concept that we all agree on is difficult. And oftentimes, I have a vision of exactly what image I want in my portfolio. Sure, I can go out and buy a DSLR like everyone is doing nowadays, and just take pictures on Auto. But I want to learn how to do it the real way. I think the photography part is really a talent and each individual person is going to be different. At this point, I just want to know how to work the camera. Anyone know of any better books? Classes?

Naturally there are many other items out there that I would love! And as you can see, 3/5 of the items I listed are quite pricey and I would be reluctant to get them, hence I would like to receive them as gifts hehe. For times like Christmas, it's nice to see tons of presents under the tree. But I would honestly like to have one great gift and everyone pitched in a little, than have tons of tiny gifts that I'm probably not going to use anyways and will probably take up space because I never throw anything away. So...what are your hot items? =D

MAC Haul

Finally after a long awaited two months since my graduation as a full-fledged pro makeup artist, I received my diploma! Which means now I can start applying for pro discounts from Mac, MUFE, Face Atelier and other possible pro makeup companies. The perks!!!

First thing's first, I went downtown to the MAC pro store. They have all sorts of stuff that a regular MAC store does not carry (such as blue and yellow lip colour! Hello, fashion shoot!). The great thing about MAC is that they honour my 40% discount on all the purchases I make on the day I hand in my application for my pro card. So this begins my two hours of that evening.

I don't know if it's necessarily true, but I personally feel that the MUA who work there have more skills than the ones in the other stores or the ones at the Bay. First of all, I notice that most of the people who work at the pro store tend to be a bit older and generally more experienced. Funny thing is a few months ago when I went there with Jason, he noticed that almost all the women working there were pregnant. Just a funny side thing. Anyways, I asked one MUA (long blonde hair tied back) for her advice on the 'must-have' items for bridal makeup. Originally, I had asked a MUA at the Richmond store to write me a list of items that would be great for bridal and she came up with a list that seems like I have to buy out all the eyeshadows in the store (hence another reason why I say that they seem to lack experience). So, I whipped out the list and showed it to Blondie and she was in the process of showing me all the colours and started to help me narrow down to the 'must haves', which was great! At that point, I started feeling tremendous pain in my stomach, a little nauseous, and light headed. I cut her off and told her I'd be right back because I was feeling sick. I'm thinking it's food poisoning from the dimsum I had earlier. After a good 20 minutes at Blenz Coffee (thank you!!) and Jay waiting outside for me with tea, I felt a bit better.

Back at the store, Blondie was just leaving because her shift ended so she referred me to another MUA. This one has been working for 15 years with vast experience. After my many questions and trying to be decisive, she helped me narrow down to 9 colours based on who it can be used for and which can be mixed to create a different colour (shown in the palette below). The other four colours were originally already part of my kit from school. She was so nice in understanding that I was on a budget and was really honest with me, not trying to sell me what I didn't need. I love all these colours and I can't wait to use them on a bride! I've already used them quite a few times testing on myself what would look good.

On top of the eyeshadow palette, I also picked up an orange creme colour corrector (absolutely necessary for Indian makeup), a lutre lipstick called Syrup (very natural shade for brides), and Lashes #42 (for a photoshoot). I really wanted the Soft and Gentle Mineral Skin Finish but it was quite pricey and the MUA suggested that if I wanted to stay on a budget for now, that I could replace that with one of my eyeshadows named "All that Glitters" (yet another great suggestion!).

In general, I was really happy with the purchases and I realized that quality does matter. After having used these, I realized how difficult it was to use certain colours on my Coastal Scent palettes. They just didn't adhere to the skin the same way. I don't mean to say that I'm a MAC fanatic. For example, I've never found a good foundation there before and seems like many people are allergic to them. There are so many lines of makeup out there and each of them have certain things that are great, even the less expensive drugstore brands. That ended my first MAC haul and then it was dinner at Benkei Ramen. Delicious and satisfying!

Much love to Jason who waited for me until he fell asleep and almost fell off the chair o^_^o. Didn't realize what time it was until I left and realized that the door was locked and it was already past 7 pm. I must say that I would not have been so patient if he was spending 2 hours looking at toys and other things that I have no interest in. <3 <3 <3

Pores No More!

I discovered a new product called Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner by Dr. Brandt. Saw it in a makeup store called Murale, which just opened in Oakridge Centre. It is said to rival Holt Refrew or Sephora. Some of the products that were there are $900 per jar and it's only sold in Murale in all of Canada. Quite impressive.

Anyways I've been looking for a solution to get rid of those nasty blackheads sitting on my nose. Continuous facials will probably help but I don't have the money for that. Cheap scrubs end up damaging the skin. Nose strips also damage the skin. I was introduced by an esthetician to Pores No More and I'm really attempted to try it. However, it's $50 a bottle so I'm just crossing my fingers that someone will get it for me for Christmas!

Counting down to Dec...9!

The day when I could possibly breathe again. Dec 9 is the day of the Catering Club's Frosty Corner Cafe. We decorate the front of the school and mark off the restaurant premises. Students decorate the area, bake, and serve as waiters/waitresses, host, cashier, cleaners, food decorators, etc. So much to do and I'm just dreading the shopping needed to be done for that. All the events leading up to that day is slowing burning me out. I've been going to school feeling like a zombie, thinking of things and then forgetting them the next second, just to remember it again, and then forget it again. Too much going on in my mind and all I want to do is have time for a photoshoot before my pictures are launched into the website (launched in January - www.EnvyMe.ca) After my bro had the swine flu, feel like I'm about to get sick now too with my head feeling heavy and my throat feeling scratchy. Have been trying to combat it by exercising and got a free 10 pass to Steve Nash Sports Club. Been there twice already and I like it but now my body feels so sore that I need even more rest. Dec 9, please come faster!!

Not bad at all.

I have been super busy and I look tired and half dead most of the time. Sometimes I wish there were more hours in the day and sometimes I wish I can pause time and just take a nap. In general though, life is going well. Praise the Lord! It's Thanksgiving and there really is a lot to give thanks for, even things that I don't normally notice. I'll just list some majors that I'm thankful for.

1) Jason

The bum is in Victoria most of the time studying, but things couldn't be better. Though apart, we're more together now in goals and values and outlook than any other time. Plus, I love the boy! (To Jay: Wajuh! Hahaha)

2) Family

I still need to work on being nicer to my family because I still tend to be very short-tempered with them. Oftentimes, I wish that I'm living on my own so I could sleep without noise and do things my way. But I'm thankful for them because sometimes when things are too quiet and lonely, the thing I would yearn for the most is some annoying noise from some annoying people that I would not trade away for anything else.

3) Work

Yay, I have a job! Though there are worries in finances and future (i.e. retirement pension plans looking pretty bleak), I'm still working with a full-time contract! Unlike many people in this economy, I still have a stable income. No extremely crazy kids this year (crazy is still part of adolescence, so I cannot escape). I have a great bunch of students running the Catering Club which is taking a lot of time but is super exciting. And who knows? Maybe through this experience, I will use it one day to actually run a business. And randomly this week, one student had a guitar in my room during lunch break and people were saying praise songs in my room. How nice!

4) Make-up

Lots of fun and I wish I could do it more! Enjoying the photoshoots and longing to develop my photography and photoshop skills so I can accomplish what is in my mind. Only just over a month before the program is complete and then I'm on my own. Freelance makeup artist - who knew I'd end up here? Interesting journey of life. Hopefully after classes are over, I can get back into more routine church on Sundays and more time to hang out with people again.

As I look around me and into my life, I see God's glory shining through - and He has blessed me!

A relatively productive week

The past week has been relatively productive. I managed to make 6 lessons for the grade 9/10's and hoping to do the same for the grade 11/12's by the end of this week. The constant nightmares of being unprepared have finally pushed me off my vacation mode. How could I relax with all those dreams?

Yesterday was my bridal exam. I really hope that there is no mix-up with the names this time and I get my pictures on time. Originally, Ursula was supposed to be my model but a couple of days before the exam, she woke up with some allergic reaction/virus that caused little red spots (like little mosquito bites) all over her face and body. So, I called upon my good ol' reliable model who just so happens to be getting married in two years - Paula. Voila! Is that a bride or is that a bride?!

I'm very much enjoying being back in makeup class again. I've especially grown to love Indian bridal makeup and accessories. It's so colourful and creative. Anything goes! Whatever you're wearing, you can use all those colours on your face and it's still not too much. Jackie and I did each other's makeup matching what we were wearing and both wearing colourful bindi dots. It was so much fun! I didn't plan on it, but I think I would like to do more Indian weddings.

Money saving strategy: cut your own hair. I haven't had a real haircut in probably two years, with probably bi-monthly visits to get my bangs trimmed ($5) which I have also saved now after having purchased this awesome razor comb from Daiso ($2).

It did a much better job than going all the way downtown and paying money to get my bangs chopped inconsistently, which I still have pictures to prove. Last night, I made Ursula trim my hair and then layer it with the comb. Woohoo! Saved $25 and the transportation costs.

Made a sudden trip to Victoria on Wednesday since Jay will be leaving very soon and we had to go check out places for his stay. Much harder than it looks. Investors, think about buying a place in Saanich, particularly near UVIC because people will be begging to stay there. Shared rooms, apartments, basements are all getting snatched up the moment they are posted (and the prices are definitely higher). It's crazy considering Victoria isn't my primary choice to reside but it's a lot harder getting renters in Vancouver. At any rate, one of my goals is to touch a bunny at UVIC since Jay told me the place is practically infested with rabbits the last time he went. They're usually pretty alert and dart away as you approach them so I was just hoping to be able to poke one in the bottom BUT then we met Tiberius.

He is so CUTE! Not only did I get to touch his bum, he just sat there and let us pet him. Clearly, he enjoyed it because he barely moved when I was petting him, and then he continued eating his carrot (that some kids threw to him) when I stopped petting him. And he's so small! Jay named him Tiberius Prime - a strong name for a tiny bunny. I miss him already. Bunnies are so cute but they are procreating so quickly that they are considered rodents now. Oh well, if I had to pick between rats or bunnies, I'd rather have more bunnies.

After much emailing chasing, and finally going to the director of the makeup department, I finally got the pictures back from my first exam! Yay!! The photographer really took her time on this I was pretty upset at the lack of professionalism since I already paid her upfront. Oh well! I'm happy with the pictures.

Makeup Madness

A long awaited photo shoot since I started my program. This long weekend, classes are canceled and a few of us decided to use this opportunity to get together and do a shoot. We did it at Jackie's place because she has a home stay who did photography as a hobby and is quite talented at it. You can check out his work at tonyworkshop.com. The shoot was fun but probably would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't so hot that our makeup melted off. It was a lot more hectic than we expected and we definitely learned from this experience. Stupidly, I forgot my usb drive I so don't have most of the pictures other than the few I sent to my own email.

It's already August and my birthday is coming up soon! Chris, where are the birthday plans? I'm turning 25 which is a big number! It's that age that if you say you're old, the people in their thirties and forties glare at you. But you can't really say you're super young anymore when all hot singers, actresses, and pageant girls are in their teens or very early twenties. And many things start to cross you're mind, like marriage and financial state which hopefully will lead to owning some kind of living space. Sometimes, you feel like you're running out of time and life is already closing in on you but I'm sure that perspective is laughable to anyone older. That's a little problem I have when I'm at work considering my departmental colleagues are at retirement age and I have to hold my tongue when it comes to making comments about me feeling old. At any rate, being 25 is a milestone because this is the age that our brains have finally reached maturity (well, most people based on cognitive studies) so if I haven't killed myself by making stupid decisions by now, I'm probably going to be alright. Well, it's not exactly my birthday yet, but praise Him for carrying me through 25 eventful years and blessing me in many outward and hidden ways!

Hairy Business

Learning to do hair has been a bit of a drag compared to makeup but I'm finding myself enjoying it more and more. Working on a judy dolls is easy because the hair has been used so much, even though they are real and were probably really healthy at one point, it's just so worn now that it becomes really easy to work with. So far I've just been messing around and haven't used any products on the hair, so it's less than perfect because there are little bits sticking up that needs hairspray or pomade but it's all good.

Simple french roll. Tease the top and comb smooth and finish with a barrel roll. As you can see, the puff on top has not been perfected here yet. Still a little lumpy from behind.

Hair twisted all around and then pinned. Flower bun is pinned in place. I added some gorgeous Indian hair accessories to dress it up that belongs to my classmate. I love that stuff. If only Chinese people still continued to make them from what they used back then, but Indian stuff is actually very similar. I would love to do an Indian theme photo shoot.

Jackie wanted me to french braid her hair Princess Leia style. I'm quite proud of myself here because I rarely french braid and I remembered I used to love that look as a kid (well maybe not tucked under but long french braid) but no one really knew how to make it look neat on my head and I couldn't do it properly.

Ursula had been my doll head at home. A messy elegant bun. Looks great with a long gown, showing off the shoulders and decollete. Again, slightly messy looking because no products were used.
Hot rollers made her look like a poodle head here, so we styled it and headed downtown for a day out! Her puff is still less than perfect.

Definitely a wedding hairstyle. Yesterday's hair exam on (1) setting with hot rollers and (2) any updo. First time I used products and took my time. Puff is finally perfected! I'm extremely proud of myself this time around because I was actually able to create what I intended. Before this, I just wing it and do whatever to fix what's ugly and if the product looks good, then yay! But obviously I can't do that for a wedding if the bride wants a particular hairstyle. Instructor also commented on this being well done so *puff up* very proud!

Still planning my photoshoots but thinking of themes, locations, and finding photographers who wants to build their portfolio. I have a very particular vision on what I want the pictures to look like so it's tough.

Good Eats (and Sees?)

I've always been a fan of Granville Island because it's one of those places that reminds me of my childhood. Daddy used to work in one of the restaurants part-time and we drove him to work every Sunday morning where we also buy a cup of hot chocolate and a $1 bag of bird feed to feed the pigeons. Good times. I've been more of a walker than a shopper or an eater there because I always assume that it's really expensive being a tourist area.

On Saturday, me and Ursula ran some errands (if you consider waking up early to check out a sale an errand, and then some) and Jason was meticulously cleaning the insides of his car at Peter's place. So by the time we're both done, it was pretty late for lunch. So after much contemplating, we decided to eat at Creekside which we originally thought was at Granville Island but wasn't. So, mistake was made and we picked a place in Granville Island and chose The Sandbar Restaurant. Peter was saying that this was where he and his wife Linda had their first date. It was a lovely place. We sat on the patio with a great view. Their clam chowder, salmon burger, and oyster burger was amazingly delicious! I'm picky with seafood and generally when they're overcooked or lack flavour due to freezing, it's just not worth my money (which was what I was expecting when I ordered). Also, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the menu wasn't overly extravagant. At any rate I didn't have to worry about that cuz Jay treated everyone that day so he was the only one left with a hole in his wallet (Thanks! ^_^).

I haven't seen a movie in...a long time. I think I watched Max Payne over half a year ago just because I tagged along with my friend, her boyfriend, and his friends. So finally, with some take-out food and Jay's gigantic TV, I finally got to watch Taken and Transformers (the first one). Most people probably have already seen them so I'm really behind.

Taken (2008) - I liked it a lot. A lot of action without a lot of gore (*thumbs up*) and I think Liam Neeson is a great actor with a lot of charisma and pretty darn fit for a man his age. Like any action movie I watch, I always wish that I had the same butt-kicking skills. A childhood desire that was never fulfilled.

Transformers (2007) - I was surprised that I enjoyed it. Maybe it was all the hype about it that I just thought it'll be one of those things that everyone says is great but ends up sucking (i.e. Harry Potter; Tokyo Drift). I think I heard more about Megan Fox when the movie came out, but I still don't see what the fuss is all about. Yeah, she's eye candy and all but her performance didn't really have much impression on me. I found that Shia LaBeouf (doesn't that translate to 'beef' in French?) was very witty without being an obvious goofball, and gave his character many dynamic traits. Although, if anything I was quite attached to the autobots. I actually felt a shock of sadness when Jazz was ripped in half and when Bumblebee lost his legs in the explosion. Nooooo!! Such tragedy! What do you know? I've become a tranformers geek. I remembered listening in on a conversation 2 years ago about something 'bot' and something 'tron' and thought 'Man, this is the epitamy of geekiness.' Things change. However, with the less than excellent reviews about the sequel, I think I'll wait until it comes out on DVD.

Today's tasks - get more clear make-up bags from Daiso ($2 is a great deal compared to $20 per bag at Hollynorth, just fyi); Buy food at Costco; Get magazines for my photomorgue project.

So I've completely skipped over the first module where we focused on skin, day/natural look, and evening/dramatic look.

Here are some of my subjects:

Jessie - first picture is the day look; second evening; third close-up on the evening eyes (eyeshadow made with mixing fushia with black and blue)

Jackie - first picture is without makeup; second is day look; third is evening look

Paula - First is without makeup under natural light; second is evening look under yellow light which is no good because it got dark by the time we finished and yellow light was all that was in the house so it took a lot away from the makeup; third is practice run for the final exam, trying to recreate the evening look under natural light. No lashes on the last one b/c I got a stomachache.

So I went to ask about my CD of photos but the photographer seemed to just have burnt double of my classmate's and didn't burn mine at all so now I need to wait for her respond. Darn it!! I want to see them!

BTW did anyone try Kozy Shack pudding before? It's delicious!

A few years back I was a pretty constant blogger on Xanga. Something happened and my password was probably hacked but I couldn't get back into it so I just gave up on it altogether. Never been able to keep a diary for more than a couple of pages but type-ranting comes so much more naturally, and it's nice to share about what's going on with me to those who care to wonder where I've gone. Facebook certainly does not cut it.

So a bit over a month has gone by since I started my freelance makeup program at Blanche MacDonald. According to many, I've disappeared from the face of the earth since I started this program because it takes up all of my Sundays and Monday evenings. The rest of the time is reserved for work and whatever else needs to be done, including a lot of much needed rest. Now that work is over (somewhat, unless you include prepping for the next school year), I have a bit more relaxation time with a wee bit o' stress thinking about what I could be doing.

Last week, we finished up our module on makeup fundamentals. Paula was nice enough to be my model even though she had a late night, so I did my practical exam on her - a day look (45 min) and an evening look (30 min). I was really looking forward to seeing the pictures today and I got the disc from the photographer but turns out that they labeled the wrong one and gave me my classmates (her name is Elana) so now I have to wait until I get the right one back. Can't wait!! That was a bit frustrating. So since that module ended, we started hair and today was our first full day. Pretty...boring, actually. The class wasn't very structured so it was just like 8 hours of playing with a dummy. Some things I came up with randomly:

Up-do french twist on the bottom and randomly pinned curls up top.

Simple teased bun. Popular wedding hairstyle with some flowers and a veil.

Teased puffy top with french twist bottom.

Braids. First time I did an inverted braid so the shape shows more than the normal way I used to do it. Fingers weren't used to it so was a bit awkward but looks kind of 'juliet-style' which is kind of cool.

A lot of teasing and backcombing just for the heck of it (bored). Freaky, eh? But with a bit more work, it could look like something on a fashion runway =D

Jessie did this hair for me, trying to reduplicate what someone did on her for a wedding. It's pretty, but I straightened it so it doesn't look so formal when I left class. Now I'm rethinking cutting my hair, since I can be more creative with long hair.

What Jackie did on me the class before. I like the volume ^_^ My first real intro to backcombing.

So am I going to do hair after finishing this program? Eh...we'll see. I certainly know why a lot of makeup artists just stick to makeup. The 8 hour classes didn't seem so long until today. Sleep time.
